Getting to Know Your Local Birth Workers - Olivia Delavega with Sweet Pea Midwifery {Flower Mound, Texas Birth Photographer}

Many pregnant women are feeling the pressure… and I’m not just talking about their baby being head down pushing on their pelvis.

I’m talking about options.

They might have a sense of unease or trepidation when it comes to their provider they’re currently with.

Is it too late to switch?

Will I be accepted?

Am I low-risk enough?

Where do I go?

If you’ve had any of these questions, let me introduce you to my sweet friend, Olivia with Sweet Pea Midwifery.

Meet Olivia!

She is a CNM (certified nurse midwife) and services the Mesquite, Garland, Rowlett, Rockwall, Forney and surrounding areas. She describes her work as “somebody who provides women with healthcare from puberty to post menopause. This includes preconception counseling, prenatal care, labor and birth care, postpartum care, newborn care up to 28 days, well woman care, STI treatment for partners and primary health care. Many people do not realize the vast array of services CNMs provide. The difference between care from a midwife and that of a physician is quite simply time and relationship building. Generally speaking midwifery practices are intentionally less booked than a primary care physician's office would be, which lends to the available time. Midwives believe in the therapeutic power of human presence.”

Olivia serves women through conception, loss, pregnancy, labor, postpartum, and women's health. She has been a nurse in women's services for over 13 years but recently graduated with her master in nursing and Midwifery. She adores the profession of women's health and believes every woman needs a midwife in their life.

She says she is first and foremost, a child of Christ, a wife, mother and daughter. Although she was born in Texas, she grew up in a small town in Tennessee with her mother and brother.

She loves both states and considers them home! She returned to Texas after high school and met the love of her life, and this October was 21 years for them! They have three of the most amazing children and feel blessed to have been chosen to be their parents. She returned to school after her first son was born and has been in school ever since. She loves to learn and enjoys time outside in the sunshine. Her favorite place to eat and have an ice cold margarita is Gloria's on Lake Ray Hubbard.

What brought you into the birth world?

My children paved the vision for my career, each one making their own unique impact on the curves and twists it has taken. It was through the experiences of each of my pregnancies, labors and births that I have found myself where I am today. They represent a separate piece of my heart! After being in the medical world for 13 years I knew it wasn't the place for me. I knew there was a better way for women to labor and birth that was more natural and I wanted to be the provider that guided the way. So many women just go with the flow and "do as they are told" I want to empower women to take control of their birth experience. I want to provide them with the evidence and be a partner in their care, with them at the lead.

How do you, personally, help women?

I meet women where they are.

If you could give a mother who is pregnant one piece of advice, what would it be?

Prepare you mind, body and soul. All three are imperative for labor and birth and each must be nurtured abundantly.

How do you anticipate the birth world evolving?

I anticipate the birth world evolving by eventually having wide spread use of CNMs in the hospital setting. The maternal mortality rate I believe will be the driver of this evolution.

What has been the hardest thing to overcome?

Misconceptions from others in the health care profession.

What is something that you are most proud of?

I am super proud of myself for venturing out and developing my business. I decided I wanted to practice in line with my values and philosophy and am proud that I did not waver.

Olivia is one of the sweetest up and coming midwives I have met. If you are wanting a true connection with an intimate feel, definitely hit up with Olivia for your midwifery needs! Her contact information is below!

You do have options, mama!
